Introduction :
The sequel of Call of Duty is Call of Duty 2, it is the second major installment in the CoD series. Relased in the year 2005. It was published worldwide by Activision except Japan where the game was published by Konami. The game was developed by Infinity Ward (PC & Xbox 360 ) and Aspyr (Mac). Game Release Dates and other information is given alongside in the table 'Call of Duty 2' (source : Wikipedia). The game is set on the plot of World War II. The game is seen through the perspective of four soldiers : An American, One Soviet an two British soldiers. The game consists of three stories and from the perspective of the four soldiers. In total there are 27 missions in the game. The game was officially announced in a press conference on 7 April 2005 by Activision. There were many changes in the game apart from Call of Duty 1. The major change was the removal of Standard point health system replaced by regenerating health system (your heath regenerates if not taking fire). Other changes like the grenade symbol indicating that a grenade is about to explode nearby were also seen.
The game achieved critical acclaim for graphics, sound and the regenerating health system. By the end of first week the Xbox 360 version had sold over a quarter million copies, the number increased to 2 million by Jan 2008 and 5.9 million by Nov 2013. The game also acquired an ad controversy in 2006 when the ad created by a Los Angeles animation studio Rhythm and Hues Studios, depicted a first-person view of events that were supposed to transpire during the game, rather than scenes from the game itself. The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) demanded the removal of that ad from public networks after three consumers filed complaint. The ASA spokesperson Donna Mitchell said that the viewers felt the ad misleading because of the superior graphics in the advertisement were not seen in the real game. Gameplay :
The game had two modes - Single Player and Multiplayer. The gamer takes the role of several allied soldiers and can carry two firearms. Like any other CoD game the weapons can be swapped by those found in the field. The player performs physical actions like crouching, proning and running. He can also scale obstacles like low walls. You can carry fragmentation as well as smoke grenades. You can see through the guns sights to aim more accurately and your compass shows both allies and enemies. The objective marker on the compass shows the areas the player needs to reach, areas to be defended or the things that are to be destroyed. You can also handle weapons like machine guns and flank canons that are fixed in some locations in the game. Sometimes you are also asked to commandeer a tank. The player also has binoculars which are not present in infantry gameplay. The binoculars can become handy for long range use of tanks, scouting and during a mission when you need to defend a town by directing artillery fire. The game takes place mostly in close combat situation so the binoculars are not used often. When the player takes damage the screen turns red an heartbeat sound of the player increases. The player must avoid more fire or he would die and start from the last checkpoint. The health regenerates when not taking fire. Sometimes when a grenade or shells or any other explosion takes place near the player, he dies instantly.
In April 2006 Infinity ward also released Call of Duty Radiant and allows the player to create his own map. The mapmaker includes Maya support which allows to make custom models to be made and imported in the game. It also adds custom effects to the game.
Multiplayer :
Call of Duty has many multiplayer game types : Team Deathmatch, Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, Capture the Flag and Headquarters. You have the maps including Normandy, Africa and Russia. According to the map you can choose from a given set of weapons. You may choose to be an allied soldier or a German soldier. PC multiplayer can hold 64 members and Xbox multiplayer can hold upto 8 players. If the players play on Xbox live they can get new map packs. There are 13 maps and three of them are the remakes of Call of Duty 1. Three extra packs named : Skirmish Pack, Invasion Pack and Bonus Pack also add a total of 8 maps.
Campaign :
Call of Duty 2 lets you play from three armies and has 27 missions. The three campaigns are described below separately :
USSR campaign :
The player plays the role of Pvt. Vasili Koslov of the 13th Guards Rifle Division, initially involved in the defense of Moscow from advancing German forces. The next level objective is the destruction of a German stronghold at Stalingrad in September 1942. The next target is to fight for stronholds along Stalingrad throughout December 1942, including cut telephone cables re-connection and recapturing the rail yard and train station. The last mission is carried out during the final Soviet offensive at Stalingrad in January 1943, which in the re-capture and defense of city blocks and Stalingrad City Hall.
UK campaign :
The player takes over as a British soldier, Sergeant John Davis of the 7th Armored Division in North Africa, led by Captain Price. The first level has the player to participate in a surprise attack on German Afrika Korps troops, ending with the destruction of German supply station. The next level has the player defending a city from overwhelming number of German counterattacks sent from North, West, South and East; finally the player achieves victory by destroying the force of German tanks using artillery. This is followed by the Second Battle of El Alamein, during which the player must fight through several trenches, machine gun nests, 88 mm guns and finally conquer the field headquarters of Germans. The assault on the EL Dabaa to intercept the remaining Germans in Egypt and destroy several 88 mm guns is the next mission, ending the first British campaign. The second set of missions begin with a mission in which the player must assume the role of a British tank commander, David Welsh. The first mission of the third campaign in Toujane, Tunisia, has the player immediately under fire, holding a house with a single machine gun and then wreaking havoc with an armored vehicle. Soon they rendezvous with the second team. The final British campaign takes place during the Battle for Caen as a part of Operation Overlord.
American campaign :
As Corporal Bill Taylor of the second Ranger Battalion, the player starts playing a role in the D-Day's assault on Pointe du Hoc to destroy a German artillery battery and hold it against a massive German counteroffensive in the next mission. Soon after, the player captures a nearby town and serves as a sniper against mortar teams until reinforcements arrive. The second focus is on the hill 400, which involves the capture of Bergstein, a disastrous attack at Hill 400 bunkers and defense against the German counterattack, with the player again performing sniper work against German mortar teams, destroying enemy armor, and generally holding the hill against the counterattack while burdened by artillery and overwhelming number of German soldiers. The ultimate goal among the Americans is crossing the Rhine river and infiltrate Germany. It starts as one of the few missions with the player put immediately under fire, providing cover fire against the Germans until crossing the river and then struggle through most of the city. In the final battle the player defeats two German Tiger Is.
End :
The end credits show the dramatic rescue of Captain Price from Germans by a group of American soldiers. After the credit ends, the words "No cows were harmed in the making of this game" will appear, as in the original Call of Duty. This is a reference to the carcasses visible in the Normandy missions.

Call of Duty 2 was generally received well by reviewers. The graphics and sound were widely praised and the reactions to the regenerating health system were mostly positive, with reviewers GameSpot and GamePro calling it an improvement over the previous health bar system. If you are a new generation gamer you might say that it's got poor graphics and plus it has got a very smaller gameplay like the original one it's still a good one to play and as they say 'Old is Gold'.
